An authentic guru is a dependable spiritual guide, an enlightened friend to a person aspiring to awaken to their innate fullness/wholeness as a spiritual being. The syllable gu means darkness (unknowing) and the syllable ru means lightness (knowing). The guru is the light of spiritual knowing that dispels the darkness of spiritual ignorance.

The guru’s primary function is to inform, guide, support and spiritually quicken sincerely inquiring souls. The receptivity and responsiveness of individuals seeking assistance determines the effectiveness and usefulness of the guru-disciple relationship.

A seeker once approached an enlightened sage asking, “Sir, can you direct me to a perfect guru? The sage then countered, “Are you a perfect disciple?”
